Education Profile of Lakshadweep

The people of Amindivi islands started receiving education only in 1871. Education system saw a huge transformation hereafter as until then only Quran was taught. Lakshadweep initially had the madrasa concept of education. As the students had to attend the madrasas during the day, the modern schools functioned during the noon till 4pm. These schools were merely government schools, which taught subjects like Malayalam and Arithmetic.


School Education in Lakshadweep


The first ever government school to open doors in Lakshadweep started at Amini on 15th January 1904. This was a landmark occasion in the island's academic history.The Minicoy High School was the first school to be set up in Minicoy Island in 1891. Currently, Lashadweep has its own Kendriya Vidyalaya and Jawahar Navodyaya Vidyalaya. Medium of instruction is mostly English and Malayalam.

Higher Education in Lakshadweep

For higher education, students had to travel to the mainland before the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru College in 1972. It was the first of its kind to come up in Lakshadweep. The college is located in Kavaratti and is affiliated to the Calicut University. he colleges of the island offer degree courses in various disciplines of arts, science and technology. The Lakshadweep colleges specialize in the departments of English, Mathematics, History, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Applications and Pisciculture.
